You think camping can be boring, don’t you? You think it’s all about spending 5 hours attempting to pitch a tent; drinking dirty water; trying to make the perfect fire and burning your hands in the process; or waking up far too early because the sun’s bothering you and the birds are too loud.

Well, camping could include all those things, but it doesn’t have to be boring at all. There’s a great campsite in Sussex that’s certainly nothing less than fabulous. It’s called The Secret Campsite and it’s a tents-only site that caters specifically for the needs of nature lovers. Although it offers different types of accommodation, the one that’s got quite a bit of attention is the Tree Tent.

Likened to a harvest mouse nest, the Tree Tent has a diameter of 3 metres and is suspended above the ground between trees in the woodlands. This tent (resembling an oversized grape) is definitely not your usual kind of camping tent. Its frame is constructed from steam bent ash wood and recycled aluminium and the cotton cover surrounding it is completely waterproof. In addition, according to campsite owner Tim Bullen, it provides a great combination of warmth in winter and coolness in summer. When booking the tent you’re provided with enough crockery, cutlery and utensils for three people, as well as a small gas hob. Visitors even receive a small welcome hamper when they arrive!

Inside the Tree Tent, things look rather cosy. It has two suspended single beds (with warm, organic wool mattresses) that help to maximise space by converting easily into seats. Although it’s ideal for two adults, it can also accommodate a child where necessary.

Being in the forest, off the ground, high up amongst the trees certainly has its advantages. For one, you’ll be treated to magnificent views over the campsite and even the South Downs National Park. What more could a nature-loving camper ask for? It’s the perfect solution if you’re looking for a weekend getaway idea this summer!
